Panic! Name not on list of candidates!

A small panic yesterday. I started to play about with Live Local plotting the 12 candidates for Park Ward, when a colleague asked where were I? Only at this point (about an hour after printing out the list) that I realised my name wasn’t there.
A quick email to the deputy returning officer and a reply within minutes apologised for the error, pointed out that they had already spotted it and were just uploading the new list.
Phew!

May Elections

Well the papers are in and have been verified, and assuming I don’t pull out I’ll be facing re-election for Park Ward this May. Due to us having boundary changes I only got one year as being a councillor, and there is the possibility that if I get the 3rd largest vote I’ll be up again next year! Good luck to all the other LibDems from across the country, including my better half Heather Quinton, who will be joining me in defending Park with our good friend Stephen Morgan.

Libdems and Goldfish

GoldfishA quick search on Google shows a lot of results for Libdems Goldfish, mostly linking to people commenting on blogs about a policy passed back in 2003 (I believe).
More suprising was that these comments are still apearing, even after the Pet welfare act was passed, and today becomes law.

Under the act the minimum age for buying a pet will rise from 12 to 16 and under-16s will not be allowed to win a pet as a prize.

Which was what we were saying all along, wasn’t it?

2p of Income Tax, so am I better off?

Today’s announcement that 2p will be taken off Income Tax looks good, however the BBC report that I’ll also lose the 10p band, so some back of the fag packet (excel) calculations show.

Before (according to 2007/8 figures from HMRC)
Income TaxPersonal Allowance £5,225 = £0
10p rate £2,230 = £223.00
22p rate £8,545 = £1,87.90
Total tax = £2,102.90

Now (using 20p and no 10p rate)
Personal Allowance £5,225 = £0
20p rate £10,775 = £2,155.00
Total tax = £2,155.00

Difference £52.10 worse off.

Pushing the correct buttons on Excel manage to show that a salary of £18,605 would result in no change and anything more would result in a tax cut.

Edit – OK for the time being I’m actually better off, forgetting to add my Council Allowance to these figures.

Why we didn’t vote for the budget

Today at full council the Liberal Democrat group refused to vote for the budget. The only reason for doing this was because the budget arrived on our doorstep on Friday 2nd March, after we had already departed for a weekend in Harrogate.
We found it totally unacceptable that such a serious document which was between 150-200 sides of A4 was sent out as an “item to follow”. If the controlling Labour group expect a debate, an amendment or even an alternative budget we expect next time to receive the paper at least two weeks in advance.
We had also decided that under the same reasoning, if the opposition Tory group had submitted or proposed any changes that this too would be voted against.
Several Labour councillors failed to understand our position, believing somehow that the few consultation sessions to decide what priorities should be made are equivalent to analysing the full and complete paper.
Let’s hope that next year, whoever is in control that we can have a serious debate about how we are to spend the tax payers’ money, by ensuring that everyone has a full chance to read and discuss the proposals with the relevant officers and political groups.

LibDem Conference at Fantasy Island?

Skegness is SO BracingHaving read my Reports to Conference I noticed that we’ve yet to confirm that we’ll be going to Harrogate again in 2008. Then on the BBC Lincolnshire website I saw this story: Theme park to get concert venue and text of the story says

Conduit Leisure said it will add a 6,000-seat indoor arena to the Fantasy Island complex at Ingoldmelds… The indoor arena would be able to host concerts and conventions.

Everyone could then enjoy the fun of Ingoldmelds and Skegness.

Perplex City

Truthly I’ve never heard of this before, however £100,000 has just be won in a cryptic treasure hunt.
What caught my eye was the winner is Andy Darley, a name which rang a bell. Now whilst I can’t confirm that it is the same one, his site does have Perplex City ads and used to run a Perplex City Card Swap.
If it is the same one, well done!
Two more seconds of detective work pretty much confirm that it is the same one, as the winners username is astro_random, which matches that of one on Andy’s website.
