(Un)official Twitter Widget

Do you have a WordPress blog, but hate playing about with the source code of your theme to insert the Official Twitter Widget?
Do you wish that instead you could just have a WordPress widget which did all the hard work for you?
Well now you can, with the (Un)official Twitter Widget.

This simple WordPress widget allows you to have the Twitter widget on your sidebar.

I wrote this widget for a client who wanted the new Official Twitter Widget, however all the WordPress plugins I came across either used the plain old widget, or did their own thing with the data.
It’s based (heavily) on the work from seanys, which used the old widget.

To install either use the built in plugin installer and search for (Un)official Twitter Widget, or visit the WordPress Plugin page and download the file, unzip it, and FTP it to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder.

  1. I actually use a dedicated plugin called Twitter Tools, for my WordPress blog(s). It is very simple to use and gives me the ability to tweet from within the programe, handy for when I tweet about new blog posts. I have tried one or two other WP Twitter widgets before, but that is the best one so far!

  2. Love how you’ve made the official widget that much more useful to the WordPress crowd.

I just installed it but noticed straight away that it only allows a single instance (I wanted to add two to my sidebar) so I started digging and noticed you are not extending the WordPress Widget class which would enable this.

Any plans to enable multiple instances? If not do you know anyway to hack your current code to enable this functionality?

    Thanks again for your efforts.

  3. Hey Ryan,

I have been using this plugin for about 3 months with no issues. All of a sudden, the script isn’t generating the html anymore. You can see it on the front page of http://www.pulseworthy.com where there a follow on twitter but no twitter box.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  4. In line with Martin’s comment, I too would like to be able to use multiple instance of your widget as I have custom sidebars on my site. Do you plan to implement this soon or is there a shortcode I can use in my other sidebar to duplicate the widget?

    Many Thanks

    Mike

  5. Hi, I have used the (Un)official Twitter Widget for this web site http://www.xanderuitgevers.nl and it works fine in Firefox, Chrome, Safari! But in IE (and there are still people using it…) the image does not show. What can I do about this? Please let me know, it’s for a client and I need to ressolve the problem, or install another widget fot Twitter…
    Thanks!

    1. Christian all the options to change are included in the settings, anything else would need twitter to make changes.
Unfortunately Twitter are changing the rules on the way their widgets work. Soon the style in use will be blocked and you will need to create them first via your account settings.
More info about the new widgets can be seen here, however they lack any styling and can’t be created on the fly.
For this reason they won’t be supported in my widget.
