Every black pixels will mean that you see nothing in the icon, but everything in the background, whilst every white pixel will mean you only see the icon and nothing in the background. The varying shades of grey in between will determine how much of the background will be visible. You also need a mask for every icon. However if you are creating a battery icon, it is likely that you will end up using the same mask file for each step. @Rica, the instructions are the same for the P1, the W950, W960 and the M600.
